THE EFFECT OF SEA POLLUTION TOWARD VISITOR EXPERIENCE AT TG. KAPAL BEACH RESORT, PENGERANG, KOTA TINGGI, JOHOR (2010)
(Introduction)
1.1 Introduction:
Sea pollution is one type of water pollution. This pollution can we see at many seas in whole world included Malaysia. But today sea pollution is so dangerous to all living things in the sea such as coral, fish, sea lion, and so on. This situation also can give a bad image to the beach. According to David Krantz and Brad Kifferstein (2000) pollution is defined as to ‘make foul or unclean or dirty’. ‘The Effects of Sea Pollution at Pengerang Beach toward Visitor Experience in Tanjung kapal Beach Resort’ is the title for this research. This topic was taking from the article that shown about Pengerang beach was polluted by oil slick activity about 15 years ago and the problem still happen now. This problem will spoil the tourism activity at Pengerang beach an example at Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort. This place is famous as holiday place for relaxing and gets some water recreation activity such as fishing, swimming, and so on. Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort offer a facilities to the visitor such as chalet, camp site, seminar hall, seaside restaurant, volleyball beach court, BBQ pit, gazebo, public bathroom and pray room for muslim. Despite Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort is famous among tourist, there have a big problem and sure will effect to visitors activity and their experience. The problem of sea pollution is oil spill by ships at Tanjung Belungkor.
1.2 Problem Statement:
Nowadays, pollution is the big environment issue that happen in the whole world. Pollution can be in water, or on the land. There are a few type of pollution which is air pollution, sound pollution, water pollution, light pollution, and land pollution. One of the famous pollution is water pollution. Every country in this world are undergo water pollution problem including Malaysia. It also can be in every surface of water such as lake, river, ocean, or drainage. One type of water pollution is sea or ocean pollution. Sea pollution is happen in every ocean in the world including a strait of Tebrau. This problem is very dangerous to ecology in marine such as can disturb and kill the aquatic life. In addition, it also can give a bad effect to the beach then will abrade the tourism activity. One of the examples of sea pollution was happen at Pengerang beach. This matter was taken seriously by Dato’ Azalina Othman, the Member of Parliament Pengerang. The proof of this sea pollution is by Pengerang Parliament web site, YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Azalina Othman Said, 25th February 2009, ‘the oil spill activity not only causes of pollution but can abrade the tourism activity at Pengerang beach.’ In her text she said again ‘since 5 year ago many tourist mutter because they cannot enjoy the beach activities it is including swimming, surfing, dive and kayaking, this is because the beach was polluted by oil surplus and rubbish .’ From this statement, we can understand that the pollution by ships at Pasir Gudang Port and Tg. Pelepas was thrown away to the sea their oil and in the same time give a huge bad impact to tourism activity. The oil spill by ships and the sludge strewn in the sea are polluting the beach. The beach look dirty and it must disturb the activity at the beach especially tourism activity.
The problem now is the researcher wants to know what the perception among visitor and what the experience that visitors have got at Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort beside the pollution at the beach?
1.3 Purpose of research:
Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort is the place that located beside Pengerang’s sea. The resort is very beautiful with the facilities that they offer to the visitor. But, in the same time there have an environmental problem which is sea pollution problem. The famous issue at Pengerang’s Sea is oil spill by ships. The researcher tries to come out with the issue and find out the effect of sea pollution toward visitor experience at Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort. In this research, the researcher wants to observe the surrounding that have polluted by open dumps and oil spill by ships. According to sea pollution issue that caused by oil spill, the researcher also wants to search all the effect of the experience among visitor at Tanjung Kapal Beach resort. The experience can be a good or bad and it depend on visitor satisfaction on the surrounding and cleanliness on the beach. But before that the researcher must get the perception of visitor or tourist towards the surrounding on the beach. The researcher wants to know what tourist or visitor thought on the beach by their view. Following the issue, the researcher thought the visitor or the tourist who come to the resort can’t have a good recreation in their holiday vacation there. This is because the situation of the surrounding at the beach. Majority of the visitor who come to this place just can do fishing activity, and camping at the camp site. So, the researcher wants to investigate how the visitors do their recreation activity at the beach that have been polluted by the oil spill and open dumps. By doing this research, the researcher will get the sureness toward the estimating on the recreation at Tanjung Kapal beach Resort.
1.4 Objectives:
a) To identify perception of visitor toward sea pollution at Pengerang beach.
The researcher wants to find visitor perception toward sea pollution at Pengerang beach. Perception is about the opinion from the observation on something that we are looking. Pollution at Pengerang beach is the worst sea pollution it must disturb tourism activity. In the same time the pollution at Pengerang’s Sea must give a big impact to the environment especially beach. So in this research, the researcher tries to get the perception of visitor toward sea pollution at Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort.
b) To identify effect of sea pollution toward visitor experience at Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort.
Tanjung kapal Beach Resort is offer many activities to the tourist and the visitor. However, the pollution that caused by oil spill and sludge strewn can influencing the visitor experience at this resort. So, in this research the research wants to identify and find out all the effect of these problems toward visitor experience. In addition the researcher wants to know what kind of visitor experience and what their get from their recreation activity at the beach.
1.5 Scope of study:
Sea pollution can give many negative effects to the environment such as can kill the aquatic living things, give bad image to the beach, can disturb fisherman activity and so on. Nowadays, sea pollution issues are the huge environmental problem can damage and disturb natural resources and also can give an impact to tourism activities. So, in this research, the researcher wants to search all the effect of sea pollution that caused by oil spill to Pengerang beach especially at area Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort. Firstly, the researcher wants to find out visitor perception toward pollution at Pengerang beach. Secondly, the researcher tries to find out the visitor experience from their recreation activities at the beach. Beside that the researcher also tries to find out effect of this problem to recreation activity in tourism and visitor experience in here. As we know, Tanjung Kapal just has one resort that opens to the tourist and the visitor. So, the researcher has chosen this resort as the study area for this research. Because the issues of the oil spill by ship and sludge strewn, the researcher tries to search and find out what the effect to visitor experience. The researcher also wants to know what kind the experience they got from their recreation activity at the beach when this pollution was happen. So, in this research, the researcher tries to find out the what kind of perception among visitor and their experience when come and doing recreation activities at Tanjung Kapal Beach Resort with the pollution at the beach.
